Government should: Investigate the disproportionate number of black people and people of ethnic minorities within the criminal justice system across the UK. Take concrete steps to end racial prejudice and bias in the criminal justice system, in line with UN advice on the prevention of racial discrimination in the criminal justice system.


Original UN recommendation

The Committee recommends that the State party ensure that the overrepresentation of black people and people belonging to ethnic minority groups at all stages of the criminal justice system in England, Northern Ireland and Wales is thoroughly investigated, and that it take concrete measures to effectively address racial prejudice and bias in the criminal justice system, taking into account the Committee’s general recommendation No. 31 (2005) on the prevention of racial discrimination in the administration and functioning of the criminal justice system.
