Plain English recommendation
Government should: Review its reservations to articles 10 (on separating under 18s in detention from adults), 14 (on free legal assistance) and 24 (on children’s right to acquire UK nationality) of the ICCPR and consider removing them. Consider ratifying the ICCPR’s Optional Protocol that allows people to complain to the UN if they think their rights have been breached.
Original UN recommendation
The Committee reiterates its recommendation (see CCPR/C/GBR/CO/6, para. 7) that the State party review its remaining reservations to articles 10, 14 and 24 of the Covenant with a view to withdrawing them. The State party is urged to reconsider its position regarding accession to the Optional Protocol to the Covenant, which provides for an individual complaint mechanism, with a view to strengthening the protection of Covenant rights domestically and internationally.
