These seven treaties are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/humanrightstracker.com\/en\/un-treaty\/cerd\/\">International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/humanrightstracker.com\/en\/un-treaty\/iccpr\/\">International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/humanrightstracker.com\/en\/un-treaty\/icescr\/\">International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/humanrightstracker.com\/en\/un-treaty\/cedaw\/\">Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/humanrightstracker.com\/en\/un-treaty\/cat\/\">Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment (CAT)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/humanrightstracker.com\/en\/un-treaty\/crc\/\">Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/humanrightstracker.com\/en\/un-treaty\/crpd\/\">Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although the rights contained in the treaties cannot be directly enforced in UK courts, they represent binding obligations in international law.<\/p>\n<p>By agreeing to follow the treaties, the UK has promised to make sure it respects, protects and fulfils the human rights standards they contain.<\/p>\n<p>The UK has not agreed to follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/ProfessionalInterest\/Pages\/CMW.aspx\">International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/ProfessionalInterest\/Pages\/IntConventionEnforcedDisappearance.aspx\">International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Justice has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/human-rights-the-uks-international-human-rights-obligations\">published information on some of the UK\u2019s international human rights obligations<\/a> and its reports to the UN.<\/p>\n<h2>How are human rights standards monitored?<\/h2>\n<p>For each of the treaties, a committee of experts looks at how well the UK is meeting the international human rights standards it has agreed to follow. These committees are called \u2018treaty bodies\u2019. The UK gets reviewed by each treaty body approximately every five years, based on evidence from the government, civil society organisations and national human rights institutions (NHRIs).<\/p>\n<p>Civil society organisations such as charities and non-governmental organisations can also submit shadow reports to the UN to provide an independent perspective on progress achieved and their main human rights concerns.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<h2><strong>The treaty monitoring cycle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are six important steps in the treaty monitoring cycle. This is a process carried out by the UN Human Rights Council to review the human rights situation in every UN Member State and make recommendations for progress.<\/p>\n<p>The UPR is a peer review carried out by the UN Human Right\u2019s Council\u2019s 47 Member States, but any UN Member State can take part in the process. To date, every country in the world has taken part.<\/p>\n<p>Member States review the human rights situations of the UK (and every country) once every five years.<\/p>\n<p>This review can cover any relevant human rights issue that is of interest \u2013 it is not limited to the human rights treaties the government has ratified. They use information from a range of sources, including a report from the government and independent evidence from UN bodies, NHRIs and civil society organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Member States then make recommendations for progress. The report includes a response from the government being reviewed saying whether it \u2018supports\u2019 or \u2018notes\u2019 each recommendation. Some governments submit a voluntary progress report at the midpoint of the five-year reporting cycle, known as mid-term reporting.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<h2>The UPR cycle<\/h2>\n<p>There are four main steps in the UPR cycle. year or two years<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on the steps they have taken to implement the \u201cfollow-up recommendations.\u201d These recommendations are clearly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">identified<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in a paragraph at the end of the concluding observations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the follow-up information is provided, the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ollow-up\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">apporteur will assess whether the issues have been addressed and whether the information provided responds to the Committee\u2019s concern and recommendations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">NHRIs and CSOs are also invited to\u00a0submit\u00a0shadow follow-up\u00a0reports to support the follow-up\u00a0rapporteur\u2019s assessment of progress on
